August 18 Monthly Meeting and Jeffery Cheramie Presentation – Exploring the History of Ornamental Turning

Jeffery Cheramie has been selected through a worldwide competitive nominating process for a 3 month Internship in Ornamental Turning at the Plumier Foundation located in Port Chester, NY. Jeffery's demo presentation for our August meeting will discuss the history of Ornamental turning and how it came to be with rising up through the ranks of Kings and Queen starting back in the 16th century through the modern times. There will be pictures of items that can be turned on the ornamental lathes, pictures of the lathes, and a tour of the Plumier Foundation. You will see one of the most expensive lathes ever purchased on auction, and even some items made out if ivory. There is a connection between Ornamental Turning and New York State. Note, this will not be a “how to” presentation, but if FLWT members are interested, there can be a separate how to presentation later at some other time. The presentation will mostly be presented through PowerPoint slides, and some short video segments, and Jeffery will show some of the items that you can make on these lathes as well some videos of actual ornamental lathes during different parts  of turning an item on several different ornamental lathes.
