October, 17 2024 – Monthly Meeting – Paul Wilkens – Half Moon Flame and Weissflog Spider Box

In our October meeting Paul will discuss how he made his Half Moon Flame piece and how he makes boxes designed by international artist Hans Weissflog.  Paul developed the Half Moon Flame piece from a picture that his wife liked. He will discuss what was successful and what needed to change as he worked through the construction. There were many techniques and jigs that were first time use for Paul so there were lessons to be learned. You will get a chance to critique both his processes and the outcome.

Hans Weissflog designs and turnings are simply amazing–wonderful simplicity of design with great care and detail in execution! A Weissflog demonstration provided the information and encouragement to replicate (with Hans’ permission) his Spider Box. Paul will walk us through the steps to make the box. But don’t worry, he won’t take the time to complete everything while we watch. He will walk us through the process and show how to be successful some of the time. Come see if he blows one up!

The meeting and demonstration will also be available via Zoom for members who are not attending in person.  Zoom will open at 6:30 pm for informal discussions, and the meeting will begin at 7:00. Zoom information will be emailed to current FLWT members a few days in advance of the meeting.

Folks attending at St Michael's Woodshop should plan to arrive no earlier than 6:30, to ensure that the student program has finished for the day. Participants enter through the main entrance to sign in with building security.
